(The Star) Terengganu plans to boost healthcare tourism sector

KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu is keen to look into opportunities in the healthcare tourism sector as another area for growth.

Mentri Besar Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the area posed huge potential as the state has already received queries from parties interested in the venture.

“We hope to come up with some sort of agreement with the interested parties within a short time and we hope to see some sort of development by next year," he said at the opening of the new Kuala Terengganu Specialist Hospital here.

Admitting that healthcare tourism in the state is at its early stage, Dr Ahmad Samsuri remains positive of the prospects as the state is equipped with the right facilities.

“We are off to a fresh start and have a lot of room to improve as we grow,” he said.

One of the first issues that it needs to solve is the number of flights that bring tourists to Terengganu.

“There are not as many compared to neighbouring states like Kelantan, which leads to fewer people coming here. It’s a chicken and egg situation which we hope to correct soon,” he said.

He also said the state would focus on post-care as it tries to put a foot in the door of healthcare tourism.

“We have some beautiful places in Terengganu which offer a conducive environment for rest and relaxation,” he said.
