(The Star) Seberang Prai ready for city status

The Penang government will consult the Housing and Local Government Ministry on Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) attaining city status.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state had intended to apply for MPSP’s city status when it helped then Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) to apply for the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) status several years ago.

“However, we were informed that there was a new policy to limit to only one city per state.

“Such policy did not exist in the past. Some states like Selangor have several cities each.

“With a new government, we will follow up and consult the ministry on the current status of the policy and if we can proceed,” he told reporters on Monday.

Council president Datuk Rozali Mohamud, who was also present, said Seberang Prai, which is the largest municipal council in the country with 738sq km of area, had achieved its requirements to be a city 10 years ago.

“Among the requirements to qualify for city status are that the local government should have a revenue of more than RM100mil and a population exceeding 500,000.

“We also need to have adequate social, educational and industrial amenities, as well as basic infrastructures.

“We have fulfilled these requirements since 2008,” he said.
