(The Star) Plans to build Manong bridge still in the works

Claims by Perak DAP that the Government had promised to build the Manong bridge is slanderous, and inculcates hate in politics, says Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharuddin (pic).

The state Public Utilities, Infrastructure, Energy and Water Committee chairman said the accusation by Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming, claiming that the Government promised to build the Manong Bridge since 1986, was incorrect.

Zainol said the approval for the bridge’s construction was only announced on June 10, 2016 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak after Kuala Kangsar elected representatives, including the constituency’s late MP Datuk Wan Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad, spent years championing the cause.

“Nga’s accusation is to create hatred towards the Government among the people.

“He had also misled the people claiming that there had been three groundbreaking ceremonies for the bridge during the Kuala Kangsar by-election last year,” he said in a statement on Aug 2.

Nga, on July 30, posted on his Twitter account claiming that Barisan’s promise to build the Manong bridge since 1986 was an empty one and urged the rakyat to reject a government that goes against its promises.

Zainol said once the approval was announced in 2016, efforts to implement the project had been carried out in accordance with the necessary procedures.

These included preparing project papers, appointing a team leader, preparation of survey data, appointment of contractors, and preparation of architectural designs, he said.

“The Government’s concern over the implementation of the project is evident when Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof dropped by the project site to check on the preliminary work.

“He also wanted to ensure that construction would begin as soon as the land acquisition process was completed,” he said.

After the designs were completed in December 2016, Zainol said the state opened for tenders by placing advertisements from Jan 31 until March 13.

“However, the handover of the project site could only be carried out on July 31,” he said.
