(The Star) CM: Expand airport capacity beyond 13 million passengers

The state government wants the Penang International Airport (PIA) to be expanded beyond the 13 million passengers capacity.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the government wanted the expansion after taking into account the strong growth rate driven by high tourist numbers to the state.

“The Government, in a written reply to my parliamentary question, had said that they are only planning an expansion of PIA to a capacity of 10 million passengers to last till 2025.

“Why expand PIA from 6.5 million passengers to only 10 million passengers, when you need to do so again in seven years’ time?

“For this reason, the state proposes that the PIA be doubled in size with a capacity that exceeds 13 million passengers,” he said in a statement on his Facebook on Monday.

He said that the airport had exceeded its present capacity of 6.5 million passengers.

He said 6.7 million passengers were recorded in 2016, four years ahead of the scheduled 2020.

“For the first five months of 2017, passenger movements grew by 8.7%.

“It is expected to exceed 7 million passengers by end 2017.”
