(The Star) Prasarana starts trial run for Penang ferry service

KUALA LUMPUR: Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has taken over the ferry service in Penang.

The trial run began yesterday.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the ministry supported the endeavour as it was confident that Prasarana had the capacity and management capabilities to handle the service.

“It will provide the best ferry service for the people between Butterworth and Penang island,” he added.

Liow was speaking to reporters at Universiti Malaya after launching Dream of the Red Chamber research collection donated by former Transport Minister Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy.

Liow also added that the trial run period for the ferry service and the contract details would be decided later.

On the “unauthorised release” of a consignment carrying high-tech radar system at Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor, Liow said he has instructed the state port authority to make a detailed study on the issue.

He believed there was no mishandling of the cargo and the items have reached their intended destination in the Netherlands.

LIow added that the PTP, as one of the top 17 ports in the world, is an efficient port.

“If there are any weaknesses in the standard operating procedure, we will get the port authority to look into it,” Liow said.
