(The Star) Open new industrial zone in Lanang, says ex-elected rep

SIBU: Dudong SUPP chairman Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck has two requests for the state government. First is to set up a new industrial zone and second, name a road after the late Datuk Patingggi Dr Wong Soon Kai, the party’s former president.

Speaking at the branch’s 10th anniversary celebration, Dr Soon said the town needed a new industrial zone to provide job opportunities for the locals.

“Existing industrial zones such as in Upper Lanang, Sungai Antu and Rantau Panjang can no longer provide enough jobs for them,” he said.

Dr Soon, who is a former Dudong assemblyman, said there were more than 100,000 people from the central zone, including Sibu, Kapit, Kanowit, Song and Sarikei currently working in Singapore and peninsular Malaysia.

He proposed that a new industrial zone be built around Lanang Bridge due to its strategic location.

“The government needs to plan for this industrial zone by providing basic infrastructure and amenities,” he said.

On a separate matter, Dr Soon said Jalan Pedada should be named after Dr Wong, who passed away on March 22.

Jalan Pedada, he said, was built in 1980 as one of the feeder roads but Dr Wong, who was the Infrastructure Development Minister in 1993, upgraded it into a dual carriageway to cater for growing traffic.

“In Kuching, we have roads named after important figures. They include Jalan Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui, Jalan Stephen Yong, Jalan Sim Kheng Hui and Jalan Merican Salim.

“We hope the government will consider our request,” he said.

SUPP Central Organising secretary Datuk Mathew Chen, who represented the party president at the dinner, said the party must win back Lanang seat from the Opposition at the next general election.

“With the coming of the elections, it is important that we are united and work together to wrestle back Lanang seat,” he added.
