(The Star) Malacca to pioneer sustainable and green city project

MALACCA: Malacca will represent the nation in the integrated approach pilot project on the urbanisation of sustainable cities.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said through the programme, Malacca would become a sustainable and green city.

“Our participation would also complement other regional initiatives,” he said when launching The Malacca Sustainable Cities Conference 2017 and Sustainable City Development in Malaysia Project 2017-2022.

Also present was Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government Ministry deputy secretary-general (policy and development) Datuk Dr Tam Weng Wah.

Idris said the pilot project involves 11 countries including Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Vietnam as well as 27 other cities.

“The initiative of transforming Malacca into a green technology state would also address issues like urbanisation and climate change.

“This programme has gained recognition from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation,” he said.

Idris said Malacca’s involvement showed the state government’s commitment to adopting green technology and raising awareness on the importance of sustainable living among locals.
